MOE Holds Critical Meeting on Financial Management to Empower Liberian Schools

In a significant move to improve financial oversight in the education sector, the Ministry of Education (MOE) held an emergency meeting over the weekend with public school principals and administrators.

According to an MOE release, the focus of the one-day gathering was on implementing new financial regulations aimed at enhancing the management of school funds.

The meeting began with a strong emphasis on adhering to updated financial guidelines designed to promote accountability and transparency in public schools.

Acting Deputy Minister for Administration Jonathan Jackson highlighted the necessity of accurate documentation for school fees, which is now mandatory.

He explained that part of the collected funds would be directed toward addressing critical challenges faced by schools nationwide.

Minister Jackson announced a change in the process for transferring funds to the Ministry, stating that schools must now maintain accounts with commercial banks.

The release highlights that these accounts will require four designated signatories: the principal, CEO, Vice Principal for Administration (VPA), and the registrar.

This initiative aims to improve oversight and protect the integrity of financial transactions within schools.

The Acting Minister for Administration urged participants to submit comprehensive budget projections for the fiscal year 2024/2025, underscoring the importance of sound financial planning and resource allocation.

Also remarking was Acting Minister of Education Amos Armah Fully, who stressed the need for qualified professionals to lead public schools.

Minister Fully introduced a rigorous vetting process for school principals to ensure that only competent leaders manage schools.

He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing educational quality through strong leadership and effective policies.

Assistant Minister for Basic and Secondary Education Abba G. Karnga advocated for best practices and ethical standards within schools, emphasizing the shared responsibility of all stakeholders to foster a conducive learning environment that meets high educational standards.

The meeting also included a presentation of the 2024/2025 reporting templates and procedures, aimed at streamlining administrative processes and reinforcing transparency in school management.

This initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to ensure effective governance in the education sector.
