MOE Launches DEI Policy to Foster Inclusivity in Higher Education

The National Commission for Higher Education, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has officially launched the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Policy in Higher Education. The unveiling occurred today at the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town on Wednesday, October 30, marking a transformative step in Liberia’s educational landscape.

Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, the Minister of Education, led the event, underscoring the vital need for a learning environment that embraces diversity. “Educational institutions must be dynamic communities that celebrate various voices and perspectives,” she stated. “When we prioritize inclusion, we enhance academic discourse and equip our students to engage meaningfully with the world around them.

The DEI Policy outlines several key practices aimed at creating an inclusive educational framework. Among these are the implementations of staff development programs that focus on inclusive teaching methods, unbiased instructional assessments, and comprehensive support systems for students with disabilities. These initiatives are designed to facilitate learning for all students and ensure that no one is left behind.

Additionally, the policy introduces stringent measures to combat gender-based violence and discrimination within educational settings. It emphasizes the importance of promoting gender equity in hiring practices and leadership roles, striving for a balanced representation of diverse groups in decision-making processes. “Equity is not merely a goal; it is necessary to foster innovation and excellence in our educational institutions,” Dr. Jallah emphasized.

Stakeholders from various sectors attended the launch, including educators, policymakers, and representatives from civil society organizations. All of them expressed their support for the DEI initiative. Many highlighted the long-term benefits of an inclusive educational environment, which they believe will contribute to the overall development and stability of the nation.

This initiative reflects a robust commitment to ensuring that all students and educators in Liberia can thrive, regardless of their backgrounds, identities, or abilities. As the DEI Policy takes root, it is expected to pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future in higher education nationwide.
