Bong County, Liberia – The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Monday, August 4, 2025, officially broke ground on a new drug depot in Bong County, marking a significant advancement in Liberia’s healthcare infrastructure. Deputy Health Minister Martha Morris, representing Minister Dr. Luis Kpoto, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts with the Global Fund and Plan International during the groundbreaking ceremony.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Health, we are pleased to break ground for constructing this drug depot. This initiative is a vital step in strengthening Liberia’s health system, as we have not had our own drug depot until now. We deeply appreciate the partnership with the Global Fund and look forward to your enduring support. We also extend our gratitude to our implementing partner, Plan International, for taking on the responsibility of executing this project.” Morris stated.
The depot’s construction, which is set to cost over US$83,000, aims to optimize the distribution of medications across rural health facilities in the county.
For his part, Global Fund Head of Strategy Planning Harley Feldbaum emphasized the importance of this collaboration, saying, “On behalf of Plan International and our Country Director, we are committed to working closely with the Ministry of Health to strengthen the health system in Liberia under the Global Fund Grant. Our goal is to serve the people of Liberia effectively, and we hope that the resources invested here will be utilized for their intended purpose.”
Also speaking, Bong County Health Team Administrator Sam Siakor expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential impact. “Today marks a significant and joyous occasion for us. The drug depot will serve as a crucial storage facility, ensuring that all necessary medications are readily available for distribution to rural health facilities. It is essential that when supplies are dispatched from the central level, they are received at a specific county location. This depot, will not only provide storage but will also include office space, training grounds, housing units, and guest accommodations.” Siakor concluded.
The completion of this project is anticipated within the next two to three months, aiming to enhance the efficiency of health service delivery in Bong County and improve access to essential medications for its residents. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by officials of the Health Ministry, Global Fund, Plan International, and local partners.
