Monrovia City Mayor Vows Swift Actions to Address Flooding at MCC

Monrovia City Mayor John C. Siafa has pledged swift action to address the city’s recurring flooding problems, following an engagement meeting at Monrovia City Hall on Monday, September 23, 2024. In his remarks, the mayor expressed deep concern over the damage and displacement caused by recent floods, assuring residents that the city government is taking steps to prevent future incidents.

“We are acutely aware of the threat that flooding poses to thousands of our residents,” Mayor Siafa stated. “As a government, we are committed to working with all stakeholders to determine the root causes of these floods and put in place measures to prevent them from recurring.”

Siafa emphasized that the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) will play a central role in flood prevention, with the Monrovia City Police supporting efforts to maintain clear drainage systems. The mayor also noted that the city is collaborating with agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) to find long-term solutions.

The mayor acknowledged that climate change is a significant factor in the increased rainfall and flooding, stressing the need for a comprehensive approach to address the problem. He also urged residents to stop disposing of trash in drainages and waterways, warning that improper waste management contributes to the blockages that exacerbate flooding.

“We regret the situation, and while our experts investigate the exact causes of the floods, we are doing everything within our power to address both the immediate and long-term effects,” Mayor Siafa concluded, promising that further updates will be provided once the investigation is complete.

Monrovia, like other parts of Liberia, continues to be ravaged by flooding. This year, the level of disasters caused by flooding is unprecedented, creating a situation that requires both short- and long-term intervention plans.
