Monrovia’s One-Million-Gallon Reservoir Restored

Monrovia, Liberia – In a landmark achievement for the city’s infrastructure, the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) has successfully dedicated a newly rehabilitated one-million-gallon city reservoir at Ducor, marking the return of surplus pipe-borne water to Central Monrovia.

The project, completed as part of the LWSC’s 100-day deliverables, is a significant step towards improving water access in the capital. Managing Director Mohammad Ali highlighted the historical challenges faced by the LWSC, particularly the difficulties in pumping water from White Plains to Central Monrovia.

These obstacles had long impeded the provision of consistent water supply to the city. The rehabilitation of the reservoir represents a critical milestone in overcoming these difficulties.”The journey to restore water supply to Central Monrovia has been fraught with challenges, especially the technical difficulties of pumping water from White Plains. This motivated us to pursue this ambitious project,” said Mr. Ali during the dedication ceremony.

Ali expressed profound gratitude to the World Bank for its partnership and support in bringing this project to fruition. He emphasized that such collaborations are vital for the development and sustainability of essential services in Liberia.”The World Bank’s support has been instrumental in our efforts to rehabilitate the city reservoir and restore water to Central Monrovia.

This partnership exemplifies how international cooperation can lead to tangible improvements in the lives of our citizens,” Ali noted.

In a bid to encourage residents to regularize their accounts and enjoy uninterrupted water supply, Mo. Ali announced a waiver of old debts for the inhabitants of Central Monrovia. He urged residents to update their statuses with the LWSC to benefit from the restored services. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone has access to clean water. To facilitate this, we are waiving old debts and calling on residents to regularize their accounts. This is a new beginning for water services in Central Monrovia,” he stated.

The head of LWSC also disclosed plans to connect 1,000 homes within Central Monrovia, at a cost of $150,000 USD. Additionally, $175,000 USD will be allocated to repair lead pipes across the city, ensuring a safer and more reliable water supply.

In addition to residential water supply, the LWSC Managing Director said the institution is collaborating with the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS)to rehabilitate fire hydrants throughout Monrovia. This initiative according to him aims to enhance emergency response capabilities by ensuring that fire hydrants are functional and readily accessible.”We are working closely with the Liberia Fire Service to rehabilitate fire hydrants, which is crucial for public safety. Ensuring access to water during emergencies is a priority,” Ali affirmed.
