Monrovia, Liberia — The Ministry of Public Works (MPW) has reversed its earlier position and officially approved the construction of another bridge over the Jor River at Chief’s Compound Community in Bong County, a project to be funded by the Citizens Movement for Change (CMC). The approval was communicated in an October 19, 2025 letter addressed to Bong County District #3 Representative J. Marvin Cole.
The Ministry’s decision follows extensive discussions held during a session of the House of Representatives, during which lawmakers pressed for clarity and authorization concerning ongoing and proposed infrastructure initiatives in the district.
In the statement, MPW informed Rep. Cole that it “hereby grants its approval for the construction of the Jor River Bridge at Chief’s Compound in Bong County,” emphasizing that the Ministry “welcomes this partnership” with the CMC and anticipates its support in delivering the project.
The Ministry also submitted detailed design documents for two major bridges planned along the Jor River corridor. According to the release, the approved bridge at Chief’s Compound will span 98 feet and cost US$518,876.36.
In addition, MPW outlined plans for a second bridge: a 200-foot structure at David’s Town, estimated at US$1,333,071.27. The documents were forwarded “to provide a comprehensive overview of the Ministry’s planned infrastructure in the area,” the letter noted.
The Ministry’s shift in stance and the substantial cost adjustment are expected to generate broad public interest, especially among residents of Bong County who have long raised concerns about road and bridge conditions that affect transportation, commerce, and emergency access.
The CMC-funded project at Chief’s Compound is now cleared to proceed, marking what local leaders describe as a major step toward improving rural connectivity and enhancing development prospects in the region.
