NaFAA Breaks Ground for Modern Fisheries Complex, DG Hails ‘Historic Milestone’

By Emmanuel M. Kangar, Jr.

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has broken ground for the construction of a modern fisheries complex, a project described by its leadership as a major step forward for Liberia’s fisheries sector.

Director General J. Cyrus Saygbe Sr. said the initiative marks a “historic milestone” for the government, noting that the facility will serve as a permanent home for fisheries administration in the country.

According to him, construction is expected to begin in the last week of May 2026 at the Mesurado Pier, ushering in what he called a new era of growth, coordination, and institutional strengthening.

The planned complex is expected to centralize operations, enhance service delivery, and improve efficiency within the sector, while also creating a more supportive working environment for staff, stakeholders, and fisherfolk nationwide.

Saygbe expressed appreciation to the World Bank for its continued support toward sustainable fisheries development in Liberia. He also commended AEP Consultants Inc for delivering what he described as an “iconic and forward-looking” design.

The project, he added, represents a significant move toward modernizing Liberia’s fisheries industry and unlocking its broader economic potential.
