The National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) has taken sweeping action against non-compliant institutions across the country, suspending the operations of 22 institutions of higher learning with immediate effect.
Speaking at MICAT Tuesday’s Press Briefing, the Commission ordered the affected institutions to cease all academic activities, citing non-compliance with national educational standards and regulations.
Among the suspended institutions are several notable names, including Cepres University, Prevailing Word University, Barshell University College ~ linked to former District #3 Representative Cebee Barshell—Christian University College, Modern University, Kollah University ~ established by former Liberty Party Secretary General Martin Kollah ~ and AVEEM University, among others.
The Commission also identified Mertu Institute, PJSL, and others as operating illegally in Liberia without the requisite accreditation.
“These closures are necessary to protect students and preserve the integrity of Liberia’s higher education system,” an NCHE official stated, emphasizing that students currently enrolled in the affected schools should seek guidance from the Commission for transfer options.
In a related development, several longstanding and accredited institutions have been issued a stern warning. The University of Liberia, Cuttington University, Bong County Technical College (BCTC), Adventist University of West Africa, Salvation Army Polytechnic University, Apex University of Liberia, and Nimba University, among others, have been given a one-year ultimatum to fully meet all academic and operational requirements or face similar closure.
The NCHE says the move is part of a broader reform aimed at raising academic standards, improving the quality of instruction, and ensuring all institutions adhere to national guidelines.
Students and parents have been urged to verify the accreditation status of institutions before enrollment and to follow official NCHE channels for updates and further instructions.
