NCHE Sets New Standards and Fees for Higher Education Accreditation in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — In a progressive step towards enhancing the quality of higher education in Liberia, the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) has published the “Basic Standards for Licensing & Accrediting Higher Education Institutions & Programs.

This comprehensive guideline outlines essential requirements that institutions must fulfill to obtain licensure and accreditation, ensuring that they meet necessary educational standards.

The commission noted its new guidelines are in line with its previous decision in June 2025, to suspend the operational licenses of higher institutions for noncompliance.

The commission requires a Legal Status: Institutions are required to possess valid Articles of Incorporation and a Certificate of Authority, demonstrating transparency in governance and providing accessible contact information, Facilities and Library: Adequate physical infrastructure must be established, which includes classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and direct access to computers and the internet.

These resources, the commission noted, are crucial for maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment.

The commission also calls for a Curriculum, detailing that educational programs offered by institutions must be relevant and supported by a standardized curriculum that aligns with national standards. Its future calls for qualified Faculty and Administration staff, noting that Institutions must employ qualified personnel for effective management and governance, supported by established laws and a comprehensive human resource manual to guide operations.

Additionally, the commission seeks a Student Handbook and Services, stating that a rigorous student handbook must be provided, detailing admissions processes, academic regulations, and a variety of student services, including counseling and extracurricular activities.

Regarding Financial and Strategic Planning, the commission requires Institutions to maintain a transparent financial policy and develop a sustainability plan along with a strategic plan for long-term success and alignment with their mission.
