Residents of Ndawelahun Town are sounding the alarm over the absence of safe drinking water, a problem that has plagued the community since its establishment. Town Chief Mr. Afried Kahalee shared the community’s ongoing challenge: “Since the town was founded, we have suffered immensely due to the lack of access to clean drinking water.”
The chief explained that the townspeople currently rely on a creek for their water supply, despite its potential health hazards. “The creek is not entirely safe for us, but it is our only option,” he said, expressing deep concern about the risks involved.
As the rainy season approaches, the community’s fears intensify. One local resident voiced her anxieties: “My biggest concern is the rainy season; the water becomes even more contaminated, and it is far from clean.” Another resident, a mother of three, described the impact on her family: “We are really suffering. I often have to travel for over an hour to the nearest town just to fetch clean water because my children have been falling ill frequently, and I know it’s because of the creek water.”
According to the latest census, located about an hour and a half from Kolba City along the Foya highway, Ndawelahun Town is home to approximately 1,325 people. The community urgently calls for help addressing the critical need for clean drinking water. Local authorities and humanitarian organizations are being urged to prioritize this issue to prevent a further deterioration of public health in Ndawelahun.
