NDC Calls on LNP to Target Officials as Persons of Interest in Capitol Arson

The National Democratic Coalition (NDC) has strongly condemned the recent arson attack on the joint chamber of Liberia’s National Legislature, calling it a lawless act that threatens the nation’s democratic values. The party has urged the Liberia National Police (LNP) to identify certain public officials as persons of interest, citing their incendiary remarks that may have incited the violence.

In a press statement, the NDC expressed grave concern over the arson, describing it as an attack on Liberia’s democratic principles, which are crucial to the nation’s stability. “Such actions are reprehensible and undermine the very foundation of our democracy. Liberia, having suffered through the scars of civil conflict, must reject lawlessness as a solution to political disputes,” the statement declared.

The NDC has called for a swift and thorough investigation by the LNP to identify and prosecute those responsible for the arson. The party stressed that all individuals, regardless of their political status, must be held accountable for actions and statements that incite violence.

“The escalating political tensions within the House of Representatives are a significant factor contributing to this violence,” the statement continued. “As elected representatives of the people, lawmakers must act with civility and consider the wider implications of their actions on the nation’s progress.”

The NDC also highlighted the worsening deadlock on Capitol Hill, which has led to political instability and violent incidents, including the recent arson attacks. The party called on all political stakeholders to respect the rule of law and await the final decision of the Supreme Court of Liberia, which is currently reviewing a bill of information filed by embattled Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.

According to the NDC, the series of events leading up to the latest arson attack includes the interpretation of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the legislative dispute by both sides, which fueled tensions. Supporters of Speaker Koffa, reportedly marching to the Capitol with the intent to disrupt activities, resulted in clashes that injured both civilians and law enforcement officers.

The situation further escalated with inflammatory comments from some lawmakers. The NDC pointed to specific threats made by legislators, including remarks about burning the Capitol Building. In a troubling coincidence, Speaker Koffa allegedly posted the phrase “The Alamo!!!” on his Facebook page, a term historically linked to violent conflict and the burning of a building in Texas. The NDC described this as a disturbing and potentially significant factor in the escalation.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values and the rule of law, the NDC called on all Liberians to reject violence and work towards the peaceful resolution of political disputes. “We remain firm in our mission to protect Liberia’s democratic institutions and promote peace and stability. The perpetrators of this heinous act must face the full force of the law,” the statement concluded.

The NDC also urged the LNP to take decisive action in investigating and holding accountable anyone whose words or actions may have contributed to the violence.
