NEC Boss to Step Down

By: Archie Boan

The Chairperson of the National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC), Davidetta Browne Lansanah, has announced her decision to step down from her position, bringing to a close more than a decade of service at the country’s electoral management body.

Madam Browne Lansanah disclosed that her resignation will take effect on March 15, 2026.
In a letter addressed to Joseph Nyuma Boakai, President of the Republic of Liberia, the outgoing NEC Chairperson explained that the decision followed consultations with her family and her desire to take time to rest after over twelve years of service to the Commission.

She publicly confirmed the move on Thursday, March 12, 2026, during her closing remarks at a tour of the ongoing renovation works at the NEC headquarters on 9th Street, Sinkor in Monrovia. The event brought together representatives of the Liberian Government, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, and other stakeholders.

Madam Browne Lansanah first served the Commission as a Commissioner before later being appointed Chairperson. Throughout her tenure, she played a key role in overseeing electoral processes and strengthening electoral governance in Liberia.

In her communication to President Boakai, she described her time at the Commission as “an honor and privilege,” emphasizing that the work of the NEC remains essential to sustaining Liberia’s democratic system.

She further reaffirmed her commitment to the progress of the country and pledged full cooperation to ensure a smooth and seamless transition once a successor is appointed.

Madam Browne Lansanah also extended appreciation to NEC staff, fellow Commissioners, political parties, civil society organizations, and international partners for their collaboration throughout her years of service.

The National Elections Commission acknowledged her contributions, noting that her leadership helped advance efforts toward credible and transparent elections in Liberia.
