Capitol Hill, Liberia – [June 19, 2025] – The National Elections Commission (NEC) has presented a proposed budget of $276,404.10 to the Liberian Senate to facilitate a by-election in Nimba County’s Electoral District 5.
The proposal has come under scrutiny from some lawmakers who believe certain budget sections, particularly those related to fuel, generator expenses, and vehicle upkeep, are overly inflated.
In a formal communication dated June 19, which was shared in a Senate plenary session by Secretary Nanborloh Singbeh, NEC Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah addressed Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence. She expressed the NEC’s readiness to justify the proposed budget before the senators.
Currently, the budget is being reviewed by the Senate Committee on Ways, Means, Finance, and Budget.
The NEC’s plan targets approximately 29,823 registered voters across 21 precincts and 69 polling places, translating to an average cost of $9.23 per voter. However, a number of senators and independent analysts have raised eyebrows at several specific budget allocations.
– $24,255 for fuel and gasoline
– $13,025 for fuel and lubricants for generators
– $11,700 for vehicle maintenance and servicing
These figures have sparked worries about fiscal responsibility and the need for increased transparency in a nation facing financial limitations and growing public calls for accountable government spending.
The scheduled by-election for August 12, 2025, follows the recent senatorial election of Representative Samuel G. Kogar, who succeeded the late Senator Prince Johnson.
After a motion made by Senator Nya D. Twayen Jr. from Nimba County, the Senate has decided to send the NEC’s budget proposal to the Committee on Ways, Means, Finance, and Budget.
The committee will assess if the requested funds correspond to actual election-related expenses or if they include excess costs.
