Nimba Mourns PYJ, ex-Rebel Leader turned Senator

Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia and Nimba County mourn the loss of Senator Prince Y. Johnson, a towering figure in the nation’s political and spiritual spheres. Senator Johnson, often referred to as Nimba’s political godfather, passed away on November 28, 2024, at the Hope for Women Hospital in Paynesville. Born on July 6, 1952, in Tappita, Lower Nimba County, he leaves behind a legacy that shaped Liberia’s political and social fabric for decades.

The Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), the party he founded, described his death as a monumental loss to the nation. The Public Affairs and Protocol Committees have outlined a detailed itinerary for his funeral and burial ceremonies to honor his life and contributions.

The funeral schedule allows Liberians across the country to pay their final respects to a leader who significantly impacted the nation’s history. On Tuesday, January 14, 2025, the funeral proceedings will commence at the Samuel Stryker Funeral Home in Monrovia. From there, the body will lie at the Capitol Building from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, where national leaders, senators, and dignitaries will pay their tributes. Later that evening, at 5:00 PM, the body will be transported to Christ Chapel of Faith Church, where Senator Johnson served as General Overseer. A wake-keeping ceremony will follow, offering a time for prayer and reflection on his spiritual contributions.

On Wednesday, January 15, 2025, the tribute continues as the funeral procession travels to Nimba County. At 2:00 AM, the procession will make a brief stop in Sanniquellie, the capital of Nimba County, for a three-hour ceremony. Residents and local leaders will have the opportunity to honor his legacy. The procession will then proceed to Karnplay City and Saclepea City, allowing citizens from these areas to bid farewell during additional tribute events.

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, a public viewing will occur at the Gompa Football Field in Ganta. Thousands of supporters, admirers, and citizens are expected to attend, reflecting on Senator Johnson’s enduring legacy as a legislator and community advocate.

The grand funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:00 AM, at the PYJ University Auditorium. This event will highlight Senator Johnson’s dedication to education and youth empowerment. The service will include prayers, eulogies, and tributes from national and local leaders, celebrating his achievements in public service, religious ministry, and community development. After the service, he will rest in a solemn burial ceremony, concluding a life devoted to service and leadership.

Senator Prince Y. Johnson was a figure of unmatched political influence, particularly in Nimba County, where he was often regarded as a kingmaker. His role as a legislator and founder of the MDR solidified his reputation as a pivotal figure in Liberia’s political arena. Beyond politics, he was a devoted religious leader whose guidance inspired many.

While Senator Johnson’s life was not without controversy, his contributions to Liberia’s political and community development remain undeniable. As Liberia prepares to lay him to rest, the commemorative events aim to honor his multifaceted legacy—spanning public service, spiritual leadership, and community advocacy.

The Public Affairs and Protocol Committees have encouraged all citizens and well-wishers to participate in the funeral activities, celebrating the life of a man who devoted his years to Nimba County and Liberia.
