“No Child Should Be Left Behind”: School of the Blind Urges Parents to Enroll Students

By Morlu F. Freeman Sr.

VOINJAMA, Lofa County – The administration of the Lofa County School of the Blind is calling on parents and guardians across the county to enroll their blind children for the upcoming academic period, as the institution works to broaden learning opportunities for visually impaired students.

According to school authorities, the institution currently operates with nine staff members and is aiming to enroll between 20 and 25 students, with eligible ages extending up to 20 years old. Administrators emphasized that all blind students will attend free of charge, as tuition remains fully subsidized.

Mr. James D. Fassama, Dean of Students, and Mr. Varflay G. Sheriff, General Secretary, expressed gratitude to the school’s partners for their support in sustaining the program. Friends of Liberia, an implementing partner, recently provided US$2,870 toward a project intended to strengthen educational services in Lofa County.

Additionally, the Executive Director of Persons with Disabilities, Director Samuel Dean, contributed 50,000 Liberian dollars for non-food items and an additional 50,000 Liberian dollars for other essential supplies to assist the school’s operations.

Despite these contributions, administrators highlighted several urgent needs. They are recommending the construction of six additional classrooms to accommodate growing enrollment. The school is also seeking support to build an auditorium and to improve mobility and accessibility features to enhance collaboration with educators and partners across districts.

School officials are encouraging parents and guardians to take advantage of the free-tuition opportunity and enroll their children as preparations for the new school year continue.
