Twenty outstanding university students were officially awarded full scholarships under NOCAL’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Educational Program. The event brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Education, the Liberia Institute of Public Administration (LIPA), civil society representatives, family members, and invited guests in a show of national unity and commitment to human capital development.
Delivering the keynote address, NOCAL President and Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Fabian M. Lai, emphasized the strategic value of the program to Liberia’s long-term development goals.
“Today, we are not just signing scholarship agreements we are signing the blueprint for Liberia’s future,” Hon. Lai stated. “While our country is blessed with petroleum resources, our greatest wealth is the energy, talent, and determination of our young people.”
The CEO also noted that the scholarship program aligns directly with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, particularly the education pillar, and supports Local Content Development by equipping young Liberians to lead in the country’s growing energy and natural resources sector.
This year’s selection process was the most competitive since the program’s inception, drawing 191 applications from all 15 counties. Following a rigorous three stage process comprising document screening, aptitude testing, and panel interviews 20 students emerged as the final awardees. Of those, 33 percent are female students, many of whom are pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), reflecting NOCAL’s dedication to gender equality and inclusive growth.
Hon. Lai encouraged the scholars to see the scholarship as both an opportunity and a national responsibility:
“You are now ambassadors of NOCAL’s vision the future leaders who will shape Liberia’s prosperity.”
In addition to the scholarships, NOCAL announced plans to expand the program through the establishment of an alumni mentorship network and internship partnerships with industry stakeholders, creating pathways for professional development and employment.
The ceremony concluded with a passionate call to action from Hon. Lai, urging both public and private institutions to invest more in education:
“The returns on educating our youth will outlast any oil discovery. Together, we are building a brighter Liberia.”
The event marks a significant milestone in NOCAL’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development and educational advancement through its CSR initiatives.
