A traditional wedding ceremony on 24th Street erupted into chaos Saturday after repeated noise complaints resulted in a confrontation between partygoers and officers of the Monrovia City Police (MCP).
According to an official statement from the MCP, officers first responded around 4:00 p.m. following a complaint about excessively loud music.
Officers reportedly advised the event hosts to reduce the volume, and the hosts initially complied.
However, a second complaint came in shortly afterward, prompting a return visit.
This time, MCP says the hosts refused to comply with the request to lower the volume.
“In accordance with the Liberia Environmental Law regarding noise regulations, officers proceeded to remove the PA system equipment,” the MCP stated. “This includes seizure, impoundment, and confiscation of machinery, equipment or instruments causing noise if it would restore tranquility.”
During the removal of the equipment, multiple individuals at the event allegedly became confrontational, resulting in a physical altercation.
Two MCP officers sustained minor injuries, including a head laceration and arm bruises, and had their uniforms damaged in the process.
The MCP further noted that “the PA system equipment confiscated was forcefully removed from the pickup truck by the event host.” Backup units were dispatched to control the scene, and the crowd was eventually dispersed.
Authorities say a full investigation is underway. “We have launched a comprehensive investigation into the matter, and the public will be informed once it is completed,” the MCP stated.
