NPA, LWSC Sign MoU to Improve Water Supply at Freeport

Monrovia, Liberia – In a significant move aimed at enhancing essential infrastructure, the National Port Authority (NPA) and the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to connect the NPA to the national water supply system. The official signing ceremony was held today at the NPA headquarters on Bushrod Island.

The agreement is expected to reduce the NPA’s reliance on borehole systems and boost water access for port users, including docked ships and staff.

Speaking at the ceremony, NPA Managing Director Hon. Sekou A.M. Dukuly emphasized the strategic importance of inter-agency collaboration. He described the initiative as a step forward in restoring piped water to the port, something he said has been absent for over a decade.

“Water is essential for life. It plays a critical role in health, supports bodily functions, and prevents dehydration. This initiative will not only improve port services but will also provide much-needed relief to ships and the thousands of users who rely on the Port daily,” Hon. Dukuly stated.

He further called on all government institutions indebted to the NPA to settle their arrears, stressing that timely payments promote transparency and institutional accountability.

Also speaking at the event, LWSC Managing Director Hon. Mohammed Ali reaffirmed his agency’s commitment to expanding access to clean and safe drinking water across all government institutions.

“We are committed to ensuring that all government facilities, including the NPA, are connected to clean, piped water. This will enhance operations and improve the working environment for public servants,” he noted.

Hon. Ali added that the Liberia Petroleum Refinery Company (LPRC), which is located near the Port, already benefits from such services, and the NPA’s inclusion marks a significant expansion of the network.

The ceremony was attended by senior staff of both institutions, who hailed the agreement as a major boost to infrastructure and service delivery in the port sector.
