The House of Representatives has summoned the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) to appear before its full plenary on Tuesday, May 20, to provide a detailed update on the reported outbreak of Monkeypox in the country.
This decision followed a leadership meeting held on Monday, May 19, in response to growing media reports confirming the virus’s re-emergence in several parts of Liberia.
The House is seeking clarity on the current status of the outbreak, the strategies being deployed to contain it, and the overall level of preparedness by NPHIL and other health authorities.
“We are concerned about the health and safety of our people. It is our duty as national leaders to ensure our health institutions are not only prepared but are taking concrete steps to prevent further spread of Monkeypox,” said a member of the House leadership.
NPHIL Director General Dr. Dougbeh Nyan is expected to brief lawmakers on resource requirements, inter-agency collaboration, and public awareness plans aimed at controlling the outbreak and mitigating public fear.
The House reiterated its commitment to supporting all national efforts to protect public health and called on citizens to remain calm, follow health protocols, and rely on credible sources for updates.
