NWASHC Boss Yarngo Arrested After Defying LACC Summons

Monrovia – Agents of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), backed by police officers, stormed the offices of the National Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Commission (NWASHC) on Wednesday, March 19, and arrested its Chief Executive Officer, George Yarngo. The arrest followed his defiance of an official summons to answer allegations of financial misconduct.

The LACC had invited Yarngo to appear before investigators on March 17, 2025, over allegations of misappropriating over USD 50,000 in public funds. However, instead of complying, he reportedly ignored the request, offering what sources described as an “arrogant and dismissive” response when contacted. His failure to appear prompted authorities to take direct action, leading to his arrest inside the NWASHC headquarters.

At the heart of the case are serious corruption allegations detailed in an LACC letter dated March 13. Investigators believe that between January and June 2024, USD 20,000 was allocated for purchasing fuel for the NWASHC’s standby generator, yet no fuel was bought, and the money remains unaccounted for. Another USD 6,000 was allegedly disbursed for generator repairs that were never carried out, while USD 30,000, intended for purchasing cleaning materials and hiring a fumigation company, also vanished without evidence of use.

Following his arrest, Yarngo condemned the manner in which he was taken into custody, calling it unfair and damaging to his reputation. He insisted on his innocence, stating that he had previously informed the LACC of his unavailability due to official duties and was willing to undergo an audit.
