Opinion: “Transforming Setback to Comeback”, Why CDC is hopeful of a return to Governance

By: Cadre Augustine F. Taylor, Jr., Chairman: Bureau of Information, Propaganda, Research & Guidance/ SUP

The CDC’s headquarters has been a camp of wraith since its painstaking loss of the 2023 Presidential elections. Every time I reached Congo Town and looked at the compound opposite Lonestar, I’m reminded of how the CDC ruthlessly looted the national treasury, abused state power, and relegated the people to nothing.

Well, a few days ago while en route to central Monrovia, I once again looked at the headquarters of the CDC, and this time visual several banners carrying the inscription “Transforming Setbacks into a Great Back.” I burst in laughter and the guy sitting by me did the same. When we were done laughing, I asked him, “did you see what I saw”? He replied “yes” and we shared our thoughts.

Interestingly, the CDC recognizes its loss of the elections as a great setback. Yes, we implore the masses of the Liberian people for being the architect of such setbacks of great proportion. Considering how the governance of the state was handled under the Weah’s administration, clinching a second term victory could have been a disaster.

We conquer with President Bokai assertions that Liberia could have ended had the CDC won the elections. Suffice to mean, had President Weah won reelection, a wanton usurpation of the constitution could’ve continued, the targeting of student leaders by Koijee through his paramilitary units could’ve become more pervasive, amongst others, mysterious deaths of professional Liberians, and the final escort of the economy into the sewage.

That the CDC whose recklessly steer the affairs of the state is hopeful of a comeback at this early stage of the Unity Party Government stern from the fact that President Bokai who campaigned rigorously to hold the CDC Government accountable on its governance of the state has refused to do so. President Boakai who also promised no business as usual has run the affairs of the state similarly, that of his predecessor.

Hence, it is imperative we highlight a few reasons why we think the CDC is still hopeful of a comeback.

  1. Lack of Audit: during the heat of the campaign and after, audit was one of the frequent words used by President Boakai. He promised a comprehensive audit of all state lutters to ensure the recuperation of assets stolen from the Liberian people by the CDC Government and its minions. Even the president’s so-called asset recovery team is yet to recover a single asset. Till date, audit remains a fiasco, despite President Bokai promised to bring in international auditors.
  2. In short, those who looted the national treasury continue to hold tightly what was looted and might use the stolen wealth at their advantage to again buy their way to power.
  3. Absence of Justice: during the Weah’s administration, several professional Liberians were mysteriously killed because of their conscious decision to place the interest of their country first. We paid homage to the four auditors, the three missing boys, and all who died mysteriously during the Weah’s presidency.
  4. Not only were Liberians mysteriously killed, there were several counts of human rights violations during the CDC regime. The July 26th, 2022, brutalization of SUP militants by domestic terrorists of the CDC-COP; Jefferson Koijee’s attack on peaceful students at the Amos Sawyer’s memorial program, and the Accarous Gray’s reckless invasion of the University of Liberia Capitol Hill Campus. Mr. Boakai who promised justice has done nothing to ensure the perpetrators of these gross human rights abuse are brought to justice.
  5. President Boakai’s failure to uphold promises: like former President George Weah, President Boakai is failing to uphold the promises he made to the Liberian people. During the campaign, President Boakai promised to ensure the representation of each county in his cabinet. However, the president has failed miserably on such a promise. Notably, President Boakai’s cabinet is dominated by Lofians, his kin’s man, while other counties remain without a representation. Furthermore, President Bokai 100 days deliverables was a wanton failure.

Under objective 7 of JNB-JKK 100 days deliverables, a promise to ensure the completion of the construction of 25 schools which are near completion were never achieved. Feces continue to ooze from the sewage tanks of Monrovia, and the president does nothing about that. John Siaffa, the cigar mafia appointed by the president is yet to unveil his plans for the city of Monrovia, but has been recklessly attacking peasant masses who have struggled to make ends mean, admits the toughness of the economy under the Unity Party Government.

  1. Disregard for the rule of Law: the rule of Law which is considered the vantage point of democracy has been grossly disregarded by the president. Thus far, president Boakai has violated the code of conduct by declaring his assets two weeks into his administration. President Boakai has removed citizens from tenure positions, and has undermined article 53 of the constitution by lying under oath. The president has also failed to approve the national budget after its passage by the National Legislature, thus violating part III, section 14.1&2 of the Public Financial Management Act of 2009.
  2. The reemergenced of Sycophancy: the CDC Government of Mr. Weah was hugely criticized by the Unity Party and members of the opposite community for its usage of sycophancy as a criterion of securing employment to public offices. Interestingly, sycophancy has reemerged under the Boakai’s administration at an astronomical height. University degenerates and high school pupils are the ones being favored and appointed by the president and his henchmen to top level positions at the expense of those with higher qualifications. Mr. Boakai Deputy Press Secretary is a high school pupil who deserves not to serve in the current portfolio he’s occupying. According to Activist Martin K.N Kollie, Liberians are losing almost $70,848 through handshake by Bokai’s ministers and appointees on every ten travels the president makes out of Liberia.

  3. It’s very quintessential to note that these early lapses of Mr. Boakai hasn’t only reinvigorated the spirit of the CDC, but has led CDCians into widely believing that a great setback can be turned into a great comeback. CDCians believed that the Boakai’s stewardship of the state thus far, is in similar regard to how the state was led by their demigod in George Weah, therefore, 2029 shall mark their return to governance.

  4. As students who have flipped conscious literature, we can’t argue the return of the CDC, for nothing is impossible in the context of history. Boakai’s governance of the state has been incredibly disastrous, and whatever happens in years to come shall be shaped by the people, for they’ve been the maker of history throughout the existence of humankind.
