Monrovia, Liberia – Opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) Montserrado County Senator Saah H. Joseph is demanding the expulsion of MedTech Scientific Company from Liberia, following a heated Senate debate on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
During Thursday’s session, Senator Joseph expressed strong opposition to an investigative report concerning MedTech Scientific’s activities at the Freeport of Monrovia.
Earlier this year, the Liberian Senate established an Ad-Hoc Committee to investigate a controversial agreement made with the company.
The report revealed that MedTech has been operating a secret account in Dubai, where millions of dollars have been transferred without the knowledge of the Liberian government.
In July 2021, the previous government, under President George M. Weah, signed a 10-year contract with MedTech for container inspections and verification services at the Freeport of Monrovia, replacing the previous contractor, BIVAC.
Senator Joseph accused MedTech of overcharging for inspection services, neglecting to install necessary weighing bridges, and failing to create jobs for Liberians.
The Montserrado County Senator asserted that the company has deprived the Liberian people of essential benefits and called for the contract to be nullified.
Senator Joseph emphasized the need to train and equip young Liberians to perform the same services currently provided by MedTech, stressing the importance of investing in local businesses.
Meanwhile, the Liberian Senate made a unanimous decision to review the controversial MedTech contract.
