Monrovia, Liberia — The political leader of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), Simeon Freeman, has sharply criticized the government for the lack of access to clean water in communities, despite what he described as large budgetary allocations to the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC).
Speaking to supporters in Monrovia, Freeman lamented that residents living near the LWSC office on Front Street still struggle to access safe drinking water. “The water and sewer office is right over there, but there’s no running water here,” he said.
“In our national budget, we give Water and Sewer $6.6 million, yet people have to cross dangerous streets to fetch water, risking their children’s lives.” Freeman alleged that corruption and mismanagement within the LWSC have prevented ordinary citizens from benefiting from government spending.
He claimed that some officials divert public funds for personal gain instead of improving public services. “You’re not seeing water because the man at Water and Sewer is misusing the money,” Freeman said.
“Half of the money goes to buy things for himself, and the rest ends up elsewhere instead of serving the people.” The MPC leader also accused government officials of prioritizing personal enrichment and favoritism over national development.
“When you take a poor man and make him president, he forgets about the people who helped him. He starts taking care of himself, his friends, and his family first,” Freeman stated.
Freeman called on Liberians to hold leaders accountable and demand transparency in the use of public funds, stressing that continued neglect of basic services like water is a sign of deeper governance failures.
