Monrovia, Liberia — In a heartfelt address to the nation, Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, the Political Leader of the Liberian People’s Party (LPP), has sent commendation to President Joseph Boakai Sr. for his recent decision to issue Executive Order #151, which prohibits the export of raw rubber from Liberia to promote domestic Industrialization. Speaking to the public via his official Facebook page, Cllr. Gongloe emphasized the significance of this directive as a pivotal step towards the industrialization and economic development of Liberia.
“Today is a great day for Liberia,” Cllr. Gongloe stated, reflecting on the long history of raw material exports that he believes has hindered the country’s progress. He noted that since Liberia’s independence in 1847, the economy has predominantly relied on exporting raw materials, which he argues cannot sustain growth and prosperity.
Cllr. Gongloe highlighted past attempts at promoting local processing, citing President Tubman’s efforts which were ultimately stymied by subsequent military regimes. He expressed gratitude towards President Boakai for recognizing the need to shift this paradigm, stating, “No more will raw rubber be exported out of Liberia. And that is the beginning of industrialization.”
He urged President Boakai to maintain this stance, encouraging the production of value-added products from natural rubber, including sanitary gloves and condoms. “This initiative is going to create jobs and increase our revenue, steering Liberia towards becoming a developed country,” he asserted.
The LPP’s political leader also conveyed his willingness to support President Boakai, aiming to foster objectivity in recognizing the government’s achievements. “When President Boakai does something commendable, we must praise him,” Gongloe remarked.
While expressing his optimism over this development, Cllr. Gongloe suggested that the next logical step would be for the government to issue an executive order halting the exploitation of Liberia’s natural resources. He believes such measures will facilitate the transition towards becoming a furniture-exporting nation, highlighting the necessity for policies that promote domestic industry over reliance on foreign entities.
Gongloe’s remarks follow the issuing of the executive order by the Liberian leader on Friday, August 1, 2025.
