Opposition MPC Political Leader Simeon Freeman Decries Economic Hardship in Liberia

Monrovia — Former presidential candidate and political statesman, Mr. Simeon Freeman, has issued a strong call for Liberia’s House of Representatives to address what he termed the nation’s pressing “bread and butter issues” — the fundamental economic concerns that directly impact the livelihoods of ordinary Liberians.

Freeman, who leads the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC), emphasized that basic economic programs aimed at reducing hardship and enabling citizens to meet their everyday needs must now be prioritized by the Legislature, particularly in the wake of recent political developments.

The MPC’s statement follows the election of Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon as Speaker of the House, a milestone that concluded a period of legislative uncertainty. Freeman and the MPC congratulated Speaker Koon on his election and commended the House for adhering to the Supreme Court’s ruling, which cleared the path for a peaceful and lawful transition in leadership.

“This moment marks an important turning point for the Legislature and the nation,” the statement read. “Liberia’s progress begins with a Legislature that is united in purpose and committed to the interests of the people.”

Freeman underscored that political reconciliation within the House should now give way to practical governance, with lawmakers focusing on unemployment, rising living costs, and deteriorating public services. He called on Speaker Koon to lead with fairness, inclusivity, and a commitment to policies that deliver real change to struggling Liberians.

The MPC also acknowledged the role played by outgoing Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, praising his decision to step down as a “bold step” that helped defuse political tensions and opened the door for new leadership. “With his resignation, former Speaker Koffa demonstrated political maturity and a willingness to put country above self,” the party stated.

Looking ahead, Freeman emphasized that Liberia’s national development hinges on a stronger, more transparent, and more accountable legislative body.
“We must move forward together—united in vision, action, and responsibility,” Freeman urged.

The MPC’s message reflects a rising tide of public frustration over economic stagnation and signals a renewed push for lawmakers to respond with urgency and resolve. As Liberia seeks to turn the page on political discord, Freeman’s call serves as a reminder that the true measure of leadership lies in delivering for the people.
