River Gee County | Feb. 17, 2026 More than 500 residents have been rendered homeless after server windstorm swept through Chedepo Jarkaken, a proposed city and administrative headquarters of Chedepo District in River Gee County, on Monday evening.
The storm struck at approximately 5:30 p.m. on February 16, 2026 unleashing fierce winds that tore roofs off homes, uprooted structures, and left a trail of destruction across the town.
Preliminary reports indicate that more than twenty buildings, including residential houses, churches, and small businesses, sustained severe damage.
Entire families have been displaced, with many now seeking refuge in neighboring homes and public spaces.
Victims materials are currently exposed to harsh weather conditions and are in urgent need of food, clothing, medical supplies, and temporary shelter.
Speaking on a local radio station, resident Otis Weah described the scene as heartbreaking. “The destruction is overwhelming,” he said, noting that many families lost not only their homes but also personal belongings and essential household items.
Chedepo Jarkaken, regarded as one of the largest and most active towns in the district, is now confronting what community members describe as a growing humanitarian crisis.
Beyond the immediate destruction of property, the storm has also dealt a serious blow to the local economy.
Several small shops and businesses that provide daily income for families were badly damaged, disrupting livelihoods and trade.
Community leaders warn that without swift intervention, the economic impact could have long-term consequences for already vulnerable households.
Local authorities and traditional leaders are appealing to national government institutions, as well as international and local non-governmental organizations, to urgently step in with relief assistance.
“We need immediate support,” said A. Swen Diggs, one of the affected residents. “The storm removed the entire roof of my house and destroyed everything inside. We are calling on humanitarian partners to come to our aid.”
Meanwhile, assessment teams have begun conducting preliminary evaluations to determine the full scale of the destruction and the resources required for recovery.
Residents noted that this is not the first time the town has experienced such a disaster. Due to the geographical location of the community, they say they remain vulnerable to recurring storms.
As a result, they are calling on environmental experts and relevant authorities to study the area and propose long-term solutions to prevent future devastation.
Despite the hardship, the people of Chedepo Jarkaken have begun clearing debris and assisting one another, demonstrating resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity.
As recovery efforts gradually take shape, community leaders stress that sustained external assistance will be critical to rebuilding homes, restoring livelihoods, and helping families regain stability.
The situation remains fluid as authorities continue damage assessments and await emergency response efforts.
