Political Analyst Abdullah Kiatamba says Boakai is losing the fight against corruption, predicts public backlash due to impunity

Independent political and policy analyst Abdullah Kiatamba has sharply criticized President Joseph Boakai’s administration, warning that the government’s handling of corruption cases is weakening public confidence and could trigger widespread backlash if left unaddressed.

Speaking Monday, December 8, 2025, during a panel discussion on OKFM, Kiatamba said that while the Boakai administration deserves credit for improving Liberia’s diplomatic standing and re-engaging international partners, those achievements are being overshadowed by what he described as a “consistent failure” to pursue accountability at home.

According to him, the government has launched several corruption-related investigations since taking office, but none has reached a meaningful conclusion. He argued that many of the probes have stalled or “died quietly,” creating public doubts about the government’s commitment to ending impunity.

Kiatamba stressed that the repeated failure to prosecute individuals accused of corruption—whether past or present officials—raises concerns that the administration is not serious about its own anti-graft agenda. “This pattern of inaction is a breeding ground for suspicion,” he said, noting that citizens are beginning to question whether the government is genuinely willing to confront powerful political interests.

He also condemned the Unity Party-led government for allowing alleged corrupt former officials to remain free without facing trial. Such tolerance, he said, signals weakness and undermines campaign promises to make accountability a national priority. Kiatamba added that the deliberate refusal or inability to bring cases to court reflects what he described as a “growing disconnect” between the government’s rhetoric and its performance.

The analyst further warned that the perception of impunity is already eroding morale within the government and may soon translate into a broader public outcry. He cautioned that citizens’ frustration will intensify if the administration fails to demonstrate that no official is above the law.

Kiatamba called on the Boakai administration to take urgent and decisive steps to strengthen the fight against corruption, revive stalled investigations, and ensure that cases reach prosecution. Without such action, he noted, the government risks losing the public trust it needs to implement its policy agenda and deliver on promises of reform.
