As economic hardship deepens across Liberia, residents of Grand Kru County are voicing outrage over Senator Albert Chie’s reported purchase of a luxury SUV worth USD $100,000, raising questions about priorities and accountability in public office.
Several citizens from the county—particularly from the Senator’s own hometown of Doswen—shared images and video footage with Verity News, showing the dilapidated condition of the Tangbetee Bridge, a critical passage connecting the area. The bridge, they say, is nearly impassable and symbolizes the broader neglect of basic infrastructure in the region.
“We are sharing these videos and photos with Verity News for you to ask our Senator, ‘Where will he pass with his $100K car when he is coming to his hometown in Doswen, Grand Kru County?’” one resident said.
The vehicle in question is believed to be an Infiniti QX80, a luxury SUV with a starting price tag of around US$100,000 raising eyebrows in a county still grappling with poor road conditions, limited healthcare access, and high unemployment.
This is not the first time Senator Chie has drawn public scrutiny. On December 12, 2023, the United States Government sanctioned the Grand Kru lawmaker for what it described as “significant corruption.” The U.S. Treasury Department alleged that Chie had “abused public positions to solicit, accept, and offer bribes to manipulate legislative processes.”
The juxtaposition of his luxury purchase with the failing infrastructure in his county has sparked fresh calls for transparency and equitable development. Many constituents say they feel abandoned by the very officials meant to represent their interests.
“How can someone drive a $100,000 car over bridges like this?” another resident questioned, pointing to crumbling planks and rusting rails.
As public frustration grows, all eyes remain on Senator Chie for answers—not just about his luxury SUV, but about his commitment to the people of Grand Kru.
