The government of Liberia has broken grounds for the construction of two overpass bridges on Tubman Boulevard and near the Ministerial Complex in Liberia.
The project Funded through aid from China, is aim to transform travel, trade, and daily life along one of the city’s busiest routes.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Joseph Boakai emphasized that the bridges represent more than just infrastructure but are essential solutions intended to alleviate congestion throughout the city.
The Liberian leader stressed the importance of improved road safety and the economic benefits of reducing traffic delays, which can hinder the timely delivery and acquisition of goods and services.
He noted that the construction will facilitate the quicker movement of emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire trucks, significantly enhancing public safety.
President Boakai described the project as a central component of his government’s national development plan, known as the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).
In his remarks, President Boakai emphasized that roads are vital for connecting people to opportunities and are crucial for addressing rural neglect, contributing to overall national development.

For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia H.E. Yin Chengwu highlighted the strengthening ties between China and Liberia, emphasizing a shared vision for economic cooperation and development.
Amb. Chengwu pointed out that despite the geographical distance, the two Nations have forged a close bond, particularly following the meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Joseph Boakai during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in 2024.
The Chinese Ambassador indicated that the recent launch of the overpass bridge symbolizes tangible progress in bilateral relations and reflects the outcomes of the strategic partnership established at the summit.
According to him, the initiative not only signifies ongoing collaboration but also underscores the traditional friendship and mutual support between the two countries, demonstrating their commitment to working together for shared growth and development.
Also speaking, Liberia’s Public Works Minister, Roland Giddings, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment in working with contractors on the overhead bridges until its completion.
The project, which will be constructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, will last for about 24 months.
