Pres. Boakai Honors Ghana Armed Forces for Contributing to Peace Through ECOWAS in Liberia

The Liberian President, His Excellency Joseph Nyumah Boakai, honored the gallant men and women of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) during the official ceremony marking the 178th Independence Day of the Republic of Liberia.

The President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, who attended the occasion received the honor on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces. The ceremony, which was held in Monrovia at the Centennial Pavilion on Saturday, July 26, 2026, reverently acknowledged the immense contribution of ECOWAS member States through peacekeeping in Liberia.

While acknowledging the progress and challenges made in post-conflict Liberia, President Joseph Boakai claimed that Liberia must now heal itself, unite for a common purpose as he inspired all Liberians to foster genuine love, peace, reconciliation and national development while emphasizing the occasion’s theme: “One people, one destiny, healing the past and building the future.”

At the ceremony, Pres. Mahama’s entourage included his Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt. General William Agyapong and Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, Stanislav Xoese Dogbe.

Pres. Boakai also hosted three (3) other regional Heads of State including President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, and President Umaro Sissoco EMBALÓ of Guinea-Bissau. Other high-profile guests, including regional representatives from the African Union and the ECOWAS, were also present.
