Pres. Boakai Reaffirms Commitment to Education, Welcomes New UL President

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has reiterated his administration’s dedication to advancing education in Liberia, expressing optimism about Dr. Layli Maparyan’s appointment as the new President of the University of Liberia (UL).

During an official meeting at the Executive Mansion on Thursday, January 9, 2025, President Boakai, as a Visitor to the University, described Dr. Maparyan’s appointment as a pivotal moment for the institution.

The President warmly received Dr. Maparyan, emphasizing the significance of her leadership in fostering transformative growth at Liberia’s premier institution of higher learning. “Liberia is not new to you, and we are excited to have you at the helm of this historic institution,” President Boakai remarked. He expressed confidence that her leadership would align the University’s goals with the government’s ARREST Agenda, particularly in education and workforce development.

President Boakai also extended gratitude to the UL Board of Trustees for their diligence in the selection process, highlighting their unanimous approval of Dr. Maparyan as a testament to their commitment to excellence. “The Board’s thoroughness is commendable, and their decision reflects their dedication to the University’s future,” he noted.

Dr. Maparyan was formally introduced to the President by Board Chairman and Grand Kru County Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa, who expressed confidence in her ability to tackle the challenges that have long confronted the University. Outgoing UL President Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh also praised the integrity of the selection process, noting its adherence to international standards and its success in identifying a highly qualified leader.

In her remarks, Dr. Maparyan expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and pledged her full commitment to the University’s advancement. Reflecting on her first visit to Liberia in 2009, she described her new role as fulfilling her dream to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development. “Liberia is no longer just my second home—it is now my first home,” she said, underscoring her dedication to her new responsibilities.

Dr. Maparyan’s induction as President of the University of Liberia will take place at a special convocation on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the Fendall Campus. Normal University operations are expected to resume on Monday, January 13, 2025.
