Pres. Boakai Urges Urgent Infrastructure Renewal at National Conference in Nimba

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has called for swift and coordinated national action to rehabilitate Liberia’s deteriorating infrastructure, warning that roads, electricity, water, and public works are critical to economic growth, social inclusion, and national recovery.

Speaking Monday at the opening of the National Infrastructure Conference in Gompa City, President Boakai said the state of Liberia’s infrastructure reflects years of conflict, neglect, and weak planning. He described the conference as a turning point aimed at reshaping how the country designs, finances, and maintains public infrastructure.

“Our infrastructure must serve people,” the President said, stressing that roads and bridges are not merely physical structures but essential lifelines that enable opportunity, dignity, and confidence in the state.

Boakai acknowledged persistent challenges, including impassable roads, unreliable electricity, limited access to safe water and sanitation, and decaying public buildings, noting that these conditions continue to burden citizens and constrain economic development. He said the focus must go beyond repairs to building resilient, modern systems that meet international standards.

Describing infrastructure development as part of Liberia’s post-war healing, the President emphasized the need for investments that create jobs, promote equity, withstand climate change, and support industrial growth.

He noted that the conference aligns with his administration’s ARREST Agenda, as well as Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Boakai urged a shift from fragmented projects to coordinated national planning driven by innovation and long-term vision.

The President praised the Ministry of Public Works, development partners, and international stakeholders for organizing the conference and welcomed regional participants, including Ghana’s Minister of Works, Kenneth Adjei.

President Boakai formally declared the National Infrastructure Conference open, calling it a national platform to chart a sustainable path for rebuilding Liberia’s infrastructure for current and future generations.
