President Boakai Accepts Administrative Leave Request from LAA Managing Director

By: Patrick Teah, Jr.

Joseph Nyuma Boakai has accepted the request of Ernest R. Hughes, Managing Director of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), to proceed on administrative leave while an investigation into allegations concerning the institution’s operations is ongoing.

According to the Executive Mansion, Hughes made the request on March 9, 2026, stating that his decision was intended to allow the investigation to proceed without any perception of interference and reaffirming his willingness to fully cooperate with the process.

The President had earlier instructed the Ministry of Justice of Liberia to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation following concerns raised by the LAA Board of Directors regarding the management of the authority.

During Hughes’ administrative leave, Deputy Managing Director for Administration, John Buway, will serve as Acting Managing Director of the Liberia Airport Authority.

The Ministry of Justice is expected to complete its investigation and submit findings and recommendations to the President by March 30, 2026.
