President Boakai Accepts Resignation of Associate Magistrate-Designate Gbeisay Amid Nepotism Debate

Monrovia, Liberia – October 1, 2025 — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has accepted the resignation of Willeyon Gbeisay, Associate Magistrate-Designate of the Paynesville Magisterial Court, following mounting public criticism over his recent nomination.

In a letter addressed to the President, Mr. Gbeisay expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him but said he was stepping aside to continue his legal studies at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law. He explained that the decision was taken “in good faith” to prevent public misconceptions and ensure that ongoing judicial reforms remain free from unnecessary distractions.

President Boakai acknowledged and accepted the resignation, thanking Mr. Gbeisay for his professionalism and commending his pursuit of both academic and professional growth.

Mr. Gbeisay’s nomination had drawn widespread public debate, with accusations of nepotism stemming from his family ties to Chief Justice Yamie Gbeisay. Critics argued that the appointment undermined public confidence in the judiciary at a time when calls for reform remain strong.

Chief Justice Gbeisay, however, defended the nomination, insisting that the President acted within the law in appointing his son as Associate Magistrate-Designate.

With the resignation, the Paynesville Magisterial Court vacancy remains open as the President considers a new nominee.
