In a significant step toward improving maternal and child healthcare in Liberia, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., on Tuesday, July 22, officially commissioned the newly renovated maternity ward and triage unit at the Government Hospital in Tubmanburg, Bomi County.
The project, fully funded by First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai, is part of broader national efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, particularly in underserved communities.
The dedication ceremony drew a large crowd, including Second Lady Madam Synleseh Stephanie Dahn-Koung, President of the African Development Bank Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, senior government officials, local leaders, healthcare workers, and residents of Bomi County.
President Boakai lauded the First Lady’s commitment to improving the lives of women and children through tangible healthcare interventions.
“This facility is not just a building,” the President said during his remarks. “It is a symbol of hope, care, and the value we place on every Liberian life ~ especially our mothers and newborns. I commend the First Lady for her vision and compassion that have brought this critical improvement to the people of Bomi.”
The upgraded maternity ward and triage unit now feature modern delivery beds, vital medical equipment, improved sanitation systems, and expanded space for patient care. According to hospital staff, the renovation is expected to ease pressure on surrounding clinics and improve health outcomes for mothers and infants in the region.
First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai emphasized the urgent need to create safer childbirth conditions for Liberian women.
“Too many of our women still face unsafe conditions when they come to deliver,” she said. “This initiative is a small step toward making maternal health safer and more dignified for our mothers.”
She reaffirmed her dedication to working with communities and health institutions nationwide to support maternal and child health, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
Following the ceremony, attendees toured the revamped facility and spoke with hospital staff, who expressed deep appreciation for the improvements. Local leaders praised the Boakai administration’s focus on people-centered development and its investment in critical healthcare services.
The Government of Liberia reiterated its commitment to strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to quality medical services for all citizens.
