President Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr, has issued a proclamation, calling the legislature to a Special Session for a Period of thirty days.
The Special Session is expected to run from Monday April 1st 2024 to Tuesday April 30.
According to the proclamation, the Legislature will reassemble to discuss matters of urgency including the draft 2024 national budget, pending nominations for the Senate’s confirmation actions, pending Legislations, and other matters of time Sensitive nature center on national development, integrity, transparency and accountability amongst others.
The President’s action is in accordance with Article, 32(b) of the constitution of Liberia Article 32(b) of the Liberian Constitution which provides that the President shall on his own initiative or upon request of each house, and by proclamation, , extend a regular session of the Legislature beyond the date for adjournment or call a Special or Extraordinary Session of that body to discuss or act upon matters of national emergency and concerns.
President Boakai believes that there are time-bound national critical issues which must be resolved as a matter of urgency and cannot wait for the return of the Legislature.
It can be recalled that the first regular Session of the 55th Legislature recently adjourned on March 14, 2024 to commence its first constituency break and the Legislature was expected to return on May 10, 2024.
