The President of the Republic of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has called back lawmakers from their break after issuing a proclamation for a special session of the 55th Legislature.
This special session will begin on Thursday, August 29, 2024, and end on Thursday, September 19, 2024. According to an official statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the special session intended to respond to critical national issues, including the Proposed Recast Budget, that require immediate attention and cannot wait until the regular legislative session resumes in October 2024.
“The proclamation is issued in accordance with Article 32(b) of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, which grants the President the authority to extend or call a special session of the Legislature upon receiving a certificate signed by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each House. The certificate has been duly received by President Boakai, prompting this extraordinary session of the Legislature,” the Ministry’s statement said.
The President has however emphasized the importance of the special session, noting that “national interest and the welfare of the people must always be prioritized.” The three-week special session is expected to provide an opportunity for the Legislature to act on key concerns affecting the nation’s fiscal stability and development agenda.
The issued proclamation, which was signed and sealed by the President on August 26, 2024, is in compliance with the 1986 Constitution of Liberia.
