The Liberian Senate has officially received and noted a formal communication from President Joseph Nyuma Boakai requesting a one-week extension for the submission of the Draft National Budget for the Fiscal Year 2026.
According to the President’s communication, the budget, which was originally due to be presented to the Legislature by October 31, 2025, will now be submitted by Friday, November 7, 2025. The request for an extension, President Boakai explained, is necessary to allow his administration additional time to conduct broader consultations with key national stakeholders and Liberia’s international development partners.
In his communication to the Senate, President Boakai emphasized that the additional time will ensure the preparation of a credible, comprehensive, and realistic budget framework that aligns with both domestic fiscal priorities and international best practices in public financial management. He further noted that the delay aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the budgeting process, thereby reflecting the government’s commitment to sound economic governance.
Following the reading of the President’s request during its Tuesday’s sitting, the Senate’s plenary reportedly unanimously agreed to take note of the communication and to await the formal submission of the 2026 Draft National Budget on the newly proposed date.
The extension marks one of the first major procedural adjustments in the national budget preparation process under President Boakai’s administration. Lawmakers and analysts have expressed optimism that the additional consultation period will help produce a budget that accurately captures Liberia’s developmental priorities, promotes fiscal discipline, and supports the government’s broader agenda for economic recovery and sustainable growth.
