President Boakai Slashes Prices of Rice and Flour, Orders Strict Enforcement Nationwide

By: Archie Boan

Monrovia, September 2, 2025 – In a move aimed at easing the financial burden on Liberian households, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has announced sweeping reductions in the prices of rice and flour, two of Liberia’s most important staples.

The announcement follows recommendations from the Presidential Ad-Hoc Committee on Price Contradictions, chaired by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr.

According to President Boakai, the wholesale price of flour has been reduced from US$39.00 to US$35.00 per 100-lb bag, while the price of rice has been slashed from US$16.75 to US$14.00 per 25kg bag.

These reductions represent my government’s commitment to ensuring that the ordinary Liberian family has access to affordable food,” President Boakai declared at the Executive Mansion. “At the same time, we are working with producers and importers to maintain fair and sustainable trade practices that safeguard continuous supply.”

The Liberian leader mandated the Ministry of Commerce inspectorate and other relevant agencies to enforce the new prices across the country. He issued a stern warning to businesses and individuals against inflating prices, cautioning that violators will “face the full weight of the law.”

While the new prices take immediate effect, President Boakai assured that the committee will continue engaging stakeholders to review cost drivers and identify more opportunities for reductions in essential commodities.

Highlighting his administration’s priorities, President Boakai stressed that stabilizing prices, strengthening food security, and reducing economic hardship remain at the center of his government’s agenda.
