In response to a recall by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Senator Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence, President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate has underscored the urgency of addressing national matters during the Special Session of the 55th Legislature.
The Special Session, as outlined in Article 32(b) of the Liberian Constitution, convenes for thirty days from April 1 to April 30, to deliberate on pressing national emergencies and concerns.
Notable topics include the FY2024 Draft National Budget, pending nominations for confirmation, and legislation focused on national development, integrity, transparency, and accountability.
Senator Lawrence commended her distinguished colleagues’ return to the plenary, recognizing the crucial role of legislative action in advancing Liberia’s interests. She extends gratitude to Senate committees for their diligent work during the initial session, particularly in the confirmation process and ongoing hearings.
Highlighting significant achievements, Senator Lawrence acknowledges the dedicated efforts of the Special Committee investigating recent protests by women linked to military personnel. Their comprehensive report, distributed to relevant stakeholders, underscores the Senate’s commitment to addressing societal challenges promptly.
Looking ahead, the Senate prepares for engagements with the military leadership to discuss budgetary priorities and affirms its commitment to establishing a war and economic crimes court. Senator Lawrence emphasizes the Senate’s responsibility to uphold justice and combat impunity.
On the establishment of the war and economic crimes court for Liberia, she said, the senate notes the concerns of the public with respect to a Resolution forwarded to the senate from the House of Representatives.
In her opening remarks, she said, the Senate is acting through its Committees on Judiciary and Defense, Security and Intelligence in a joint effort to accordingly advise the plenary of the Senate.
She also said the culture of impunity in Liberia has been a long-standing issue. However, the Senate is keen on taking the appropriate steps, and the joint committee is expected to appropriately advise the Senate within one week beginning Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024.
As the Senate reconvenes, Senator Lawrence urges collective action to prioritize national needs, with a focus on the budget’s impact on development and citizen welfare. She underscores the importance of program-based appropriations and decentralized expenditure to ensure equitable distribution and tangible benefits for all Liberians.
