A peaceful protest organized by the civil society group Solidarity Trust for a New Day (STAND) turned violent on Thursday, leaving two officers with head injuries.
One officer from the Liberia National Police (LNP) and another from the House of Representatives’ security detail sustained injuries after protesters began hurling stones at the joint security forces stationed at the Capitol Building.
The protest, which had initially remained calm, escalated shortly before noon.
The demonstration was organized to highlight grievances including alleged police brutality, worsening economic conditions, corruption, and what STAND described as the “illegal removal” of former House Speaker.
Protesters also criticized what they called wasteful public spending under the current administration
Speaking at the protest, STAND chairman Mulbah K. Morlu accused President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s government of failing to address pressing national issues.
“The government is losing touch with the people,” Morlu said. “This administration is not delivering on its promises.”
Morlu, formerly the chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), said STAND would continue to mount pressure until the government responds to their demands.
The injured officers are reportedly receiving medical treatment. Further updates on their condition were not available at press time.
