PUL Opens New Office, Eyes Permanent Headquarters

The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) on Thursday marked a major milestone with the official opening of its new head office on 9th Street, Sinkor.

The event drew a host of dignitaries, including PUL President Julius Kanubah, government officials, and both past and current leaders of the Union.

In his remarks, President Kanubah expressed gratitude for the support received and emphasized the significance of the move within the broader context of the Union’s mission since its founding on September 30, 1964. As the PUL approaches its 61st anniversary, he reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to promoting journalists’ rights, free speech, and democracy.

Kanubah also called on members to remember colleagues facing health challenges, promoting solidarity within the profession. He credited ArcelorMittal Liberia and the Liberia National Police for their financial contributions, which made the relocation possible.

Importantly, Kanubah noted that the Union’s previous office on Clay Street was not owned by the PUL, making the new facility a key step toward self-reliance. He revealed that progress is underway to secure land on 14th Street, where the Union hopes to construct a permanent headquarters. He urged members to collaborate and contribute to making that vision a reality.

Calls for Transparency and Support

Former PUL President Peter Quaqua expressed support for the current leadership’s direction and steered clear of past controversies related to a US$100,000 funding issue. He pledged US$1,000 toward the headquarters project and advocated for the establishment of a dedicated bank account to handle all donations transparently. He cautioned members against handing over cash and encouraged direct deposits to ensure accountability and avoid future embarrassment.

Government Pledges Support

Speaking on behalf of the government, Information Minister Jerolimak Matthew Piah highlighted the importance of media-government collaboration. While acknowledging occasional disagreements, he emphasized the need for mutual respect for national progress.

Minister Piah also warned against efforts to stifle the media, noting such actions could lead to crises. He urged the media to engage the government on development initiatives and pledged government support for the Union’s construction efforts.

The media securing its own headquarters is not just a win for journalists, but a win for democracy,” Piah said.

He congratulated the PUL for taking bold steps toward establishing a permanent home, calling it a hopeful new chapter for the organization and Liberia’s media sector.

A Dream in Motion

Journalists in attendance praised President Kanubah and his team, calling the relocation a “long-awaited dream” that sets the Union on a stronger path toward independence and institutional growth.
