Rainbow Initiative Liberia Conducts Capacity Workshop to Strengthen Fight Against SGBV

Monrovia, Liberia – Rainbow Initiative Liberia has concluded a one-day intensive workshop aimed at strengthening its internal governance structure and enhancing the organization’s role in the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Liberia.

The workshop, held in Congo town, brought together newly appointed board members of Rainbow Initiative Liberia and focused on equipping them with knowledge and tools necessary to support the organization’s mission.

Speaking at the event, the Acting Country Representative of Rainbow Initiative Liberia, Madam Francelia Nimene, said the training was organized to build the capacity of board members and ensure their effectiveness in steering the organization’s vision.

“Rainbow Initiative Liberia is part of a regional network operating in countries such as Sierra Leone and Guinea,” Madam Nimene explained. “We saw the need to bring in a consultant to train our new board members in Liberia to help strengthen our efforts in combating SGBV.”

She highlighted key components of the training, including board governance, roles and responsibilities, and methods for ensuring board members are well positioned to oversee and support the organization’s programs.

Madam Nimene also revealed that the initiative has been actively involving stakeholders such as parents, motorcyclists, and media professionals to serve as community allies in spreading awareness and directing survivors of GBV to available services.

Serving as facilitator, Mr. James S. Fofana, a governance and policy expert, described the workshop as an important platform for participants to learn and exchange experiences.

“This was not just a lecture,” Fofana stated. “It was an interactive forum that allowed participants to share their perspectives while gaining a better understanding of governance structures, including the importance of bylaws, Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), and the relationship between Rainbow Initiative and partner entities.”

Mr. Fofana emphasized the importance of proper board functioning in ensuring accountability, strategic direction, and effective service delivery in tackling SGBV issues across Liberia.

For his part, the newly elected Acting Board Chairman, Cllr. Isaac L. George Jr, expressed confidence in the board’s ability to support the management team in achieving Rainbow Initiative’s objectives.

“We are developing a plan that ensures every board member plays an active and supportive role,” Cllr. George said. “Together, we want to move Rainbow Initiative Liberia to greater heights.”

He disclosed that the board is currently working on hiring a new Country Director and establishing robust fundraising mechanisms to support the operations of the organization.

Rainbow Initiative Liberia continues to be a key player in the fight against SGBV, focusing on community engagement, survivor support, and advocacy. The workshop marks a significant step in reinforcing the governance backbone necessary to sustain its critical work in Liberia.
