‘Rape Scandal’ Rocks: Deputy Minister Bryant McGill Accused of Sexual Abuse

By: Archie Boan

Monrovia, Liberia — A serious allegation of sexual abuse has been leveled against Bryant McGill, Deputy Minister for Youth Development at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The victim is a 14-year-old girl and the daughter of the Ministry’s Deputy Chief of Security. The case has been transferred to the Liberia National Police (LNP) central headquarters for investigation.

Victim’s Account and Father’s Action

According to the victim’s father, his daughter was staying with her aunt, who operates a restaurant at the Ministry, to ensure her safety. The father’s fears were realized on Saturday, August 30, 2025, when his sister called him at 10:00 PM to say the girl, who had gone to the restaurant that morning, had not returned. After a frantic search, the father decided to report his daughter missing at the Zone #8 police depot in Paynesville.

At midnight, while on his way to the depot, he found his daughter on a bike near the SKD complex. Fearing her father’s reaction, the girl initially hesitated to speak, but after being pressured, she confessed she had been with Minister Bryant McGill. She told her father that the first incident occurred on Wednesday, August 27, 2025. She claimed that McGill had threatened her life to keep her silent. On Saturday, August 30, the situation allegedly escalated when McGill reportedly forced her into his office, tore her clothing, and subjected her to further sexual assault.

Minister’s Elusive Response

Our reporter attempted to contact Minister McGill for comment. Initially, he stated he was in a meeting and would call back. When contacted again an hour later, he claimed to be in a noisy area and promised to return the call. Later, his phone was off. Subsequent attempts to reach him were successful, but McGill claimed he was in Buchanan and on his way back to Monrovia, so he can’t speak to the issue at the moment.

Investigation and Official Response

Hours after Verity News released a report on the alleged rape scandal involving the Deputy Minister for youth development, the Ministry of Youth and Sports confirmed that its Deputy Minister for Youth Development, Mr. J. Bryant McGill, is under criminal investigation by the Liberia National Police (LNP) following grave allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor.

According to the Ministry, the complaint was filed by the alleged victim’s father, Christopher Davis, who also works at the Ministry.

In a statement Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Ministry said it is taking the matter seriously and has pledged full cooperation with law enforcement to ensure a transparent and impartial process.

To avoid any perception of interference, Minister McGill has requested a leave of absence, which the Ministry has accepted and forwarded to the President’s office for action.

“The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to upholding the law, safeguarding the integrity of public service, and protecting the well-being of young people,” the release stated.

The Ministry also urged the public and the media to allow the police investigation to proceed without interference, promising further updates as the case develops.
