Recycled Politicians: Is JNB Using EJS and GMW’s Playbook?

Monrovia, Liberia- Like ex-Pres. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and ex-President George Weah, Pres. Baokai appears to have an affinity for old, failed, corrupt politicians.

His appointments since coming to power in January 2024 do not suggest any real difference or change. Political pundits remain stunned mainly by some of these appointments.

Boakai’s latest appointment of Mr. Lewis Brown as Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr. Ali Sylla as Ambassador-designate to Senegal, Mr. Al-Hassan Conteh as Ambassador-designate to the United States, Mr. Brahima Kaba as Ambassador to Kuwait, among others, is a representation of the idiom “old wine in a new bottle.”

Brown, Conteh, Sylla, and Kaba, who are on record for serving under Ellen Johnson-Sileaf and George Weah in similar ambassadorial roles for over 2 decades, are set once more to represent Liberia out there.

An investigation by Verity News with documents in our passion has even established that Kaba is a retired Foreign Service Officer currently receiving NASSCORP pension benefits, but Pres. Bolakai has appointed him to serve as Ambassador to Kuwait.

Since these appointments, there have been mixed reactions, with many pro-Boakai supporters’ alias rescuers expressing disappointment in Boakai’s decision to appoint recycled politicians, some of whom even opposed his presidency.

According to a release from the Executive Mansion, the nominations affect several high-profile diplomatic postings across the world, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Kuwait, Qatar, Senegal, Morocco, Ghana, and the Liberia Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

The new appointees include Al Hassan Conteh – Ambassador-Designate to the United States of America; Genevieve Kennedy – Ambassador-Designate to the United Kingdom; Teeko Yorlay, Ambassador-Designate to France, and Edward Appleton – Ambassador-Designate to Japan.

Others include Brahima Kaba – Ambassador-Designate to Kuwait; Mohammed Kanneh – Ambassador-Designate to Qatar; Ali Sylla, Ambassador-Designate to Senegal; Joseph Johnson, Ambassador-Designate to Morocco; Musu J. Ruhle – Ambassador-Designate to Ghana; and Lewis Brown – Ambassador-Designate to the Liberia Permanent Mission in New York.

These appointments are part of President Boakai’s ongoing efforts to enhance Liberia’s diplomatic ties with the international community and promote the country’s interests abroad.
