Sinoe County Electoral District #3 Representative Alex S. Noah has described the recent Supreme Court ruling as “unambiguous,” asserting that the decision is straightforward and requires no further interpretation despite claims from some individuals to the contrary.
Speaking on a local radio show in Monrovia on Monday, December 9, 2024, Rep. Noah emphasized that the Court’s judgment, delivered on Friday, aligns with the Liberian Constitution and is not intended to serve the interests of any political party or bloc.
“The ruling is clear and straightforward. Anyone claiming otherwise is interpreting it based on their biases, affiliations, or personal interests,” Rep. Noah stated.
The lawmaker aimed at the majority bloc within the House of Representatives, accusing them of disregarding constitutional processes. He argued that their actions, particularly efforts to remove Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, lack constitutional legitimacy and demonstrate an unwillingness to follow due procedure.
“There is no constitutional basis for what they are trying to do,” Rep. Noah said. “The Supreme Court doesn’t need to declare who is right or wrong—the law speaks for itself.”
Rep. Noah suggested that certain factions within the legislature are conspiring to oust Speaker Koffa for personal or political reasons, labelling their approach as unfair and destabilizing. He urged his colleagues to return to the House of Representatives and respect the rule of law.
“If Speaker Koffa and other officers were elected through lawful procedures, why can’t we use the same legal framework to remove him?” Rep. Noah questioned.
He further advised dissenting lawmakers to “go back to the House, gather the necessary votes, and follow the constitutional process for removal. Pretend to do your work and stop being defiant.”
Rep. Noah accused the majority bloc of evading the legal procedures outlined by the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the House’s internal rules. He emphasized that any actions taken outside these guidelines would be illegitimate.
“The Constitution and NEC have clear guidelines for removing representatives. If you refuse to follow those guidelines, your actions are illegitimate,” he stated.
The lawmaker clarified that his stance is not an endorsement of Speaker Koffa but rather a commitment to defending the Constitution and the procedures that govern the House. “We are not supporters of Koffa as an individual; we are defenders of the Constitution, policies, and procedures that govern this House,” Rep. Noah emphasized.
Rep. Noah called on his colleagues to protect the legislature’s integrity by returning to their duties and respecting the Supreme Court’s ruling.
In addition, he appealed to President Joseph Boakai to intervene in the ongoing legislative crisis, stressing the need for decisive leadership at this critical moment. “If President Boakai is serious about his AAREST Agenda and ensuring peace and stability, he must act now,” Rep. Noah urged.
He also warned that any government ministry or agency cooperating with the majority bloc would risk implicating the executive branch in the turmoil. Reports indicate that ministries, including the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and the Liberia Maritime Authority, were summoned over the weekend to discuss the 2025 fiscal year budget. Rep. Noah suggested that such actions would signify executive interference in legislative matters.
