Rep. Bility Cuts Salary by 50%, Urges Lawmakers to Follow

In a demonstration of fiscal responsibility, Nimba County District 7 Representative Musa Hassan Bility has announced a voluntary 50% reduction in his legislative salary and benefits, calling on his colleagues in the 55th Legislature to do the same.

Bility’s decision comes in response to the economic strain caused by the suspension of USAID programs in Liberia, severely impacting key sectors, including healthcare and education. He stressed that national leaders must set an example by making financial sacrifices to support struggling institutions and citizens.

He disclosed that the deducted portion of his salary will be directed to the Saclepea Comprehensive Health Center in Nimba County, which has suffered a sharp budget cut from $120,000 to $75,000 for the 2025 fiscal year. The reduction, he said, has left the hospital unable to procure a vehicle for emergency response and transportation for doctors and nurses. To address this critical need, Bility pledged his funds toward purchasing a pickup truck to enhance the hospital’s operations and improve medical response services.

“This is not just about donating money; it is about leadership, patriotism, and selflessness,” Bility stated. “We are in an economic crisis, and as lawmakers, we must make sacrifices that directly benefit our people.”

He urged fellow legislators, the Chief Justice, and members of the Judiciary to follow suit by cutting their salaries and redirecting the funds toward vital community projects. He argued that Liberia’s lawmakers must step up and embrace economic discipline in the wake of the abrupt loss of U.S. aid, which he described as a defining moment for the nation.

“The people we serve are facing economic hardship, and we cannot continue to place personal interests above national priorities,” Bility said. “We must be willing to make financial sacrifices that ensure stability and resilience for Liberia.”

He also commended President Joseph Boakai for addressing the financial crisis and called for a collective effort among national leaders to find sustainable solutions.
