Rep. Bility Voices Strong Support for Salary Reduction Bill, Calls for Broader Reform

Nimba County District #7 Representative Musa L. Bility has publicly expressed full support for the Senate bill introduced by Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon, titled “An Act Fixing the Monthly Remuneration of the Legislature”, which seeks to reduce lawmakers’ salaries to $5,000 per month.

In a statement released on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Rep. Bility applauded Senator Dillon’s initiative as a significant step toward fiscal discipline, accountability, and fairness in government.

“I stand 100% in support of this bill,” Bility said. “At a time when our people are struggling to access basic healthcare, quality education, and decent public services, it is morally indefensible for their elected representatives to continue to preside over a wage structure that is generous to officials and cruel to citizens.”

The Nimba County lawmaker, however, argued that salary reform should not be limited to legislators alone.

He urged that the measure be expanded to include the Executive Branch, including the President, Vice President, and top officials of ministries, agencies, and state-owned enterprises, noting that their remuneration and benefits should also be capped at $5,000 per month.

“One of the deepest wounds in our democracy is the perception that government is a machine designed to enrich public officials,” Bility said. “Capping salaries of all top public officials will help save the country significant resources, free up millions of dollars that can be redirected to hospitals, schools, medicines, teacher pay, and infrastructure, promote discipline in public spending, and send a clear message that leadership begins with sacrifice, not privilege.”

Bility emphasized that equitable reform across government branches is essential for restoring public trust and confidence. “Applying the same benchmark across the Executive Branch and standardizing salaries at a reasonable level will help restore public trust and confidence, and show that we, as leaders, are prepared to live within limits,” he said.

The legislator also pledged his support for the bill in the House of Representatives and promised to advocate for its speedy passage once it reaches the lower chamber.

“To my colleagues in both Houses, this is not about comfort, nor is it about popularity. It is about justice and responsibility,” Bility said. “History will remember whether we used our time in office to protect our personal allowances or to reset Liberia on a path of fairness and discipline. The Liberian people are watching.”

The debate over lawmakers’ pay has dominated public discourse in recent months, as citizens and civil society groups continue to call for greater transparency and equity in government remuneration.
