Rep. Foko Appears Before LNP After Controversial RemarksĀ

Montserrado County District #9 Representative Frank Saah Foko appeared before the Liberia National Police (LNP) on Thursday, December 19, 2024, following a summons regarding his controversial comments about “burning down” the Capitol Building. These remarks were made prior to the devastating fire that engulfed the Capitol on December 17, 2024.

Foko, who arrived at the LNP headquarters after the police request, issued a statement affirming his cooperation with the investigation. He emphasized his respect for the justice system and commitment to ensuring due process throughout the inquiry. “I have always prioritized the safety and well-being of our citizens, and I strongly believe in maintaining peace and order in our communities,” Foko said in his statement.

He further clarified that his public service efforts have always promoted Liberia’s welfare, expressing confidence that the LNP would conduct a fair and impartial investigation. “It is my hope that these processes will not be influenced by political considerations, as the pursuit of justice should remain above all political and personal interests,” he added.

The controversy stemmed from Foko’s comments, made during an emergency press conference by Inspector General of Police Gregory Coleman, who had demanded that the representative turn himself in for questioning regarding his statement about burning the legislative session. This demand came in the wake of violent protests led by Janjay Baikpeh on December 17, 2024, which escalated into clashes between demonstrators and police near the Capitol.

Foko, a vocal supporter of Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, has fiercely opposed Koffa’s potential removal, labeling the move unconstitutional. His inflammatory remark, “We will burn this session,” raised concerns and prompted speculation regarding his possible involvement in the Capitol fire.

Despite the mounting public scrutiny, Foko reiterated his commitment to peace and justice in Liberia. “Every Liberian deserves to live in a society where their safety is guaranteed, and the rule of law is upheld without exception,” he stated, emphasizing his dedication to maintaining the nation’s stability.
