Mounting concerns over the performance and transparency of the Asset Recovery and Property Retrieval Taskforce have prompted Maryland County District #1 Representative, P. Mike Jurry, to renew his call for the team’s formal appearance before the House of Representatives.
Speaking to journalists at his Capitol Building office on Monday, May 19, 2025, Representative Jurry, Chairman of the House’s Committee on Ways, Means, and Finance stressed the urgent need for the Taskforce to provide a comprehensive report detailing its operations, achievements, and challenges since its inception under Executive Order No. 126.
Jurry emphasized that the Taskforce, which is funded through the national budget, must be accountable to both the Legislature and the Liberian people. He argued that in the spirit of transparency and fiscal responsibility, institutions receiving public funds should be regularly scrutinized and provide measurable results aligned with their mandates.
Despite the extension of the Taskforce’s mandate by President Joseph Boakai through Executive Order No. 145 in March, the House has yet to receive any official communication or operational report from the team. This lack of formal reporting, Jurry noted, casts doubt on the Taskforce’s effectiveness and raises broader questions about the administration’s commitment to accountability.
“While we continue to hear reports in the media about ongoing investigations and asset recovery efforts,” Jurry stated, “these claims remain unsubstantiated in the absence of formal documentation.”
He maintained that summoning the Asset Recovery Team before the full plenary is not only necessary but reflects a growing legislative effort to ensure all public institutions deliver on their responsibilities to the nation.
